Free Professional Development

Date: March 8th – April 30th

“Let’s face it, the reality that some of us might be teaching an online music class next year is real, and I want to help. I’m offering an eight-week professional development course on how to teach a music production class for FREE. The course comes with a free teacher license of the Shedthemusic’s Production Through Performance curriculum and an extended trial of Soundtrap EDU. The goal of the PD is to give teachers an opportunity to develop their song writing ability on Soundtrap in a highly structured environment-NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Participants will go through the Production Through Performance curriculum as if they were students. In addition to the curricular units, we will: discuss teaching the curriculum in person and remotely, transcribe a pop song to develop the ear, and create a support network of educators to collaborate with in the future.

The Production Through Performance curriculum is centered around learning how to write, play, and record drum grooves, bass lines, chordal parts, and melodies using the MIDI or typing keyboard. Students learn basic music theory and the rules of writing radio-ready pop songs in a highly scaffolded setting with a focus on musicianship. The skills learned in the course transfer to traditional performing ensembles. Students will be able to play with better time, and they will have a deeper understanding of what occurs behind the music. PTP is available through Shedthemusic’s learning platform and through MusicFirst. You can learn more about the curriculum here

The PD will be hosted on Facebook using their learning platform. The goal is to get as many people to join the PD as possible so we can develop a large learning community. Most of the course will be asynchronous with optional weekly synchronous Zoom sessions. “
